Preparing for Your First Pilates Class: What to Bring to Pilates Academy Arjan
Pilates Academy Arjan offers full classical apparatus in small groups at Building 88, Shop 05, Al Barsha South Third in Arjan. Unlike reformer-only studios nearby, it includes Cadillac, Chair, Fuse Ladder and Matwork. Classes run Monday to Friday 7 AM to 10 PM, and weekends 9 AM to 5 PM, serving Arjan, Al Barsha South, Dubai Hills, Motor City, Dubai Sports City, JVC and JVT. Booking uses Glofox.
What clothes should you wear to your first class?
Choose fitted clothing that allows free movement without bunching. For women, wear a supportive sports bra, close-fitting leggings or shorts, and a tank top or fitted T-shirt. Men opt for fitted shorts or leggings with a breathable shirt. Avoid loose T-shirts or baggy trousers as they can catch on apparatus like the Reformer springs.
Footwear is simple: no shoes or bare feet. Bring non-slip grip socks to prevent sliding on the padded surfaces of the Cadillac or Chair. If you forget them, the studio sells them on site. Breathable fabrics like moisture-wicking polyester blends work best in Dubai's warm climate, keeping you comfortable during 50 to 60 minute sessions.
Layer if needed for cooler studio air conditioning, but remove layers before starting. Fitted clothes help instructors see your alignment for precise corrections, essential in classical Pilates.
Do you need to bring a water bottle and towel?
Yes, bring a reusable water bottle with a secure lid to sip between exercises. Hydration supports your focus on controlled breathing and core engagement. Place it near your apparatus station, out of the way of moving parts like the Reformer's carriage.
A small hand towel or microfibre cloth is useful for sweat, especially on your hands or the apparatus handles. The studio keeps common areas clean, but personal towels prevent slips on bars or foot straps. Larger bath towels are not needed as mats are provided and sanitised between classes.

What personal items are essential or optional?
Essential items
Your phone for Glofox check-in, but switch it to silent and store it in the designated basket. A hair tie or band keeps long hair secure during inversions like Short Spine Massage on the Reformer. Optional but helpful: a small hairbrush for quick touch-ups post-class.
Optional comforts
Consider a light sweater for the changing area if you feel chilly. Avoid jewellery like rings or necklaces that could snag on springs or straps during exercises such as Single Leg Circle on the Reformer. No bags on the studio floor; use the entry shelf.
Chewing gum is best left outside to maintain nasal breathing, a key Pilates principle taught in every class.
Does the studio provide mats and apparatus?
The studio equips every client with a dedicated apparatus station, including Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair or Fuse Ladder Barrel based on the class. Mats for Matwork are studio-supplied and hygienic. Small props like magic circles or small balls appear in some sessions but are always provided.
You do not need your own mat, reformer straps or therabands. This full-apparatus setup sets Pilates Academy Arjan apart from nearby reformer-only spots. Instructors explain anatomy behind each piece, like how the Cadillac's trapeze table supports spinal articulation. Read more on Cadillac first impressions.
Stations are spaced for max five participants, ensuring clear paths and instructor access.
Should you eat before class and what about bags?
Eat a light snack 60 to 90 minutes before, such as a banana or yogurt, to fuel without discomfort. Heavy meals hinder diaphragm breathing and core activation. Sip water steadily throughout the day prior.
Leave large bags at home or in your car. The studio has limited cubbies for keys, phones and small wallets during class. No changing rooms for privacy, so arrive dressed. Post-class, freshen up in the restroom if needed before heading to areas like Dubai Hills or Motor City.
How early should you arrive and what is the check-in process?
Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to complete Glofox check-in, store items and meet your instructor. This settles nerves and lets you observe the warm-up. Late arrivals may join quietly but could miss foundational cues.
Scan your Glofox QR code at entry. Instructors greet you, assign your apparatus and review basics like foot positioning. Use this time to ask about modifications. Classes start promptly, flowing through classical order as detailed in our guide to full classical Pilates order.
First-timers get a quick orientation to springs and safety, emphasising controlled movement over speed.
Common questions
Can I bring a friend who is not booked?
Friends may wait in the reception area but cannot enter the studio floor during class. Groups are capped at five for focus. Encourage them to book their own introductory three classes for AED 300 via Glofox.
What if I forget grip socks?
Grip socks are available for purchase at the front desk. Bare feet work for Matwork but grip helps on apparatus. Instructors adjust cues accordingly.
Do I need my own Pilates mat?
No, all mats and apparatus are provided and cleaned between uses. Bringing personal items simplifies your prep. Focus on clothing and hydration instead.
Is there parking nearby in Arjan?
Street parking and building lots serve the area. Arrive early for spots near Building 88, Shop 05. Public transport from JVC or Dubai Hills is straightforward.
Can I wear regular trainers?
No trainers or shoes allowed to protect apparatus and ensure grip. Remove them at the door. Grip socks or bare feet only.
