Reformer Mermaid Exercise Side Bending Form for Rib Cage Mobility
Pilates Academy Arjan in Building 88, Al Barsha South Third, offers full classical apparatus including the Reformer. Our instructors explain the anatomy behind movements like Mermaid in classes capped at five people. You book through Glofox for sessions from 7 AM to 10 PM weekdays.
What is the Reformer Mermaid exercise?
The Mermaid targets lateral flexion of the spine and rib cage mobility. You start seated sideways on the Reformer carriage, facing the footbar. Your bottom leg bends with foot on the carriage, top leg extends forward along the frame. Place your nearest hand on the footbar for support, and lift the opposite arm overhead.
As you inhale, lengthen through the spine. On the exhale, side bend over the bent leg, drawing your armpit towards your hip. Return to centre with control. This sequence isolates the obliques and intercostals without twisting the torso.
Our Arjan studio Reformer sessions integrate Mermaid into side body work. New clients begin with three classes for AED 300 including VAT to learn such form cues safely.
How do you set up correctly on the Reformer?
Adjust the spring tension to one or two lights, typically red or blue springs for Mermaid. Sit sideways with your sitz bones rooted on the carriage edge. Bend your bottom leg so the foot presses against the carriage heel rest. Extend the top leg straight, toes pointed, parallel to the track.
Hand and arm positioning
Your hand closest to the footbar grips it lightly at shoulder height. Extend the far arm overhead, palm facing down, to create length. Avoid collapsing the shoulders; keep them away from your ears.

Test the carriage stability before bending. In our small group classes, instructors check your alignment to prevent rib hiking.
What are the key form points for side bending?
Initiate the bend from the rib cage, not the waist. Imagine elongating one side of your torso while the other anchors. Your gaze follows the extended arm to maintain neck neutrality. Exhale fully to deepen the curve without forcing.
Avoid common faults like leading with the shoulder or shortening the spine. Keep hips square and stacked. The bottom hip lifts slightly as you bend, but returns evenly.
Link this to related work, such as Reformer Side Splits for hip alignment, to build comprehensive lateral strength.
How does Mermaid support rib cage mobility?
This exercise expands the intercostal muscles between your ribs, aiding breath capacity. The side bend creates space on the convex side, countering tightness from daily postures. You practise controlled mobility that translates to fuller rotation in other moves.
Over repetitions, your rib cage learns to move independently of the pelvis. Instructors highlight how obliques engage to stabilise, preventing sway back.
Practice pairs well with Spine Twist on Mat for rotational control.
What breathing pattern fits the Mermaid?
Match breath to movement phases precisely. Inhale to prepare and lengthen tall through the crown. Exhale to side bend, hollowing the obliques on the lengthening side. Inhale again to return centre with opposition.
Common breath errors
Do not hold your breath during the bend; this tenses the ribs. Beginners often exhale too soon, losing length. Aim for a smooth cycle over 4 to 6 counts per side.
In Arjan classes, we cue breath to deepen mobility without strain. Sessions from 9 AM weekends suit varied schedules.
How do you progress the Reformer Mermaid?
Start with 3 to 5 bends per side, holding 3 seconds at end range. Advance by adding a Mermaid twist: after bending, rotate the top shoulder back gently. Use no springs for pure stretch once strong.
Progress to Mermaid with leg lift: extend both legs and bend. This challenges balance. Our full apparatus allows transitions to Cadillac Side Kick Series for similar side work.
Track evenness between sides in your journal after class.
Common questions
What if my ribs hike during Mermaid?
Rib hiking signals over-reliance on neck muscles. Anchor your bottom rib cage down with breath. Place a hand on top ribs to feel stability. Instructors adjust springs lighter if needed. Practice mat versions first for awareness.
Can beginners do Reformer Mermaid?
Yes, after basic Reformer orientation. New clients at Arjan start with intro packages. Modify by keeping both feet on carriage. Build to full form over three classes. Avoid if acute side pain exists.
How often should you practise Mermaid?
Include it 2 to 3 times weekly in Reformer sessions. Alternate sides evenly. Rest 48 hours between if sore. Combine with mat classes for reinforcement. Glofox tracks your attendance.
Does Mermaid help with daily posture?
It counters one-sided habits like carrying bags. Improved rib mobility supports upright alignment. Notice easier breathing in sitting. Sessions in small groups refine this application.
What springs suit different levels?
Beginners use one red spring. Intermediate add a blue. Advanced go springless for control. Instructors tailor during class. Test carriage return smoothness before starting.
